Lean Kaizen in Furniture Industry

Timber, boards, hardware and finished furniture often sit in large inventory levels, tying up working capital and masking inefficiencies. Lean Kaizen uses VSM, pull systems and planning improvements to achieve lower RM and FG inventory, faster order-to-dispatch lead time, and more space available for productive work by:

• Map RM, WIP and FG inventory across the value stream and quantify days of stock and carrying cost.
• Introduce basic pull/Kanban concepts between cutting, machining, assembly and finishing so upstream processes make what downstream genuinely needs.
• Reduce batch sizes and transfer quantities to keep products flowing rather than waiting.
• Rationalise SKU mix and batch sequencing to balance efficiency and responsiveness.

For home and office furniture, the real “moment of truth” is often at the customer’s site—during installation. Poor SOPs, missing hardware or skill gaps here drive rework and customer dissatisfaction. Lean Kaizen helps to:

• Standardise assembly sequences and work instructions for each product (wardrobes, beds, tables, cabinets, shelving units).
• Ensure hardware management (screws, hinges, fittings) is organised so installers are not wasting time searching or improvising.
